Part Three Micro Teach reflection
The micro teach subject was related the BTEC National Sport and concentrated on sports psychology, in particular the Inverted U theory and ‘choking’ under pressure. Throughout the lesson I attempted to include techniques in which I had learnt throughout the PCET course. For example the use of formative assessment and how to gain control of the classroom. But most importantly I tried my upmost and seemed to succeed in engaging students, although at some points I feel that inclusivity may have been lacking. I feel as I used the same volunteer during the experiment part of the lesson and some peer feedback (see appendices for peer feedback) stated that I could have used multi gender volunteers rather than the same male. In hindsight if I was to repeat the lesson I would use a male and female volunteer to analyse the difference but also to be inclusive and show no sexism.
From the feedback in which I received from my tutors, which states that I used all white male examples and maybe didn’t promote equality and diversity. This could have easily being avoided by more careful planning, for example I feel as though I could have used different sports instead of all team sports, and I could have also used female example like Jessica Ennis, and maybe an example of a different ethnicity such as Usain Bolt. If the lesson was to be repeated this is defiantly something in which I will take on board and apply not only to this particular subject but all subjects in which I intend to teach. By doing so I will be promoting equality and diversity within my lessons.
Another part of tutor feedback stated that I asked closed questions such as ‘ did you understand that?’ this only allows students to give a yes or no answer and does not report the whole story. In the future I will ask question in which are more open and in which require more of an explanation to answer to show understanding. In relation to this I also asked questions in which the answers was stated on the board. For example when showing a clip of David Beckham and Jade Dernbach I asked the class, ‘does anyone know how those sports people are?’ again this is could have been avoided with more careful planning. In the future I will avoid putting the answers on the board and plan more carefully.
Again according to the feedback (see appendices for tutor feedback) in which stated I should watch my terminology and the way in which I get my point across, for example I used comments in which could be seen as sexist by stating ‘what is my wife cooking for tea’ And comments in which can be seen as over aggressive such as using the term ‘kill them’ 3 times when trying to explain over aggression. In hindsight this is defiantly not appropriate within a classroom and I will have to rectify this terminology immediately and think before I speak in future sessions.
However, there were some positives to come out of the session, according to peer and tutor feedback my PowerPoint was well presented and engaging for students, the clips in which I used linked in with the PowerPoint. I in cooperated some smart board use to highlight points of the diagram to ensure understanding, again it was useful to have the smart board training as it is easier to draw and circle key points rather than just pointing them out. This is defiantly a technique in which I will incorporate into more sessions.
I also related the session to humour for example one of the clips and snippets of Mr Bean been sarcastic as to where the penalty went. This seemed to be engaging students and encouraging humour throughout the lesson, I am a strong believer in humour making people feel at ease and promotes enjoyable teaching and learning, however in saying that I understand that humour can also be offensive so care is to be taken when using humour.
Finally I made use of Blooms Taxonomy throughout the lesson especially at the developmental and mastery levels, this is important to do as it relates to how much a student has learnt but also ensure that theories are taken on board and students will feel comfortable to incorporate into future assessments. Blooms taxonomy is something in which should be used in every lesson to ensure learning has taken place and can also be used to gage a level of understanding.
Overall the outcome of tutor feedback stated that my micro teach was satisfactory and went well. I appreciate the points for development as this will only make my teaching stronger, but also gives a fantastic ideas to incorporate and make session more inclusive and engaging.
